Call for Youth Artists for Leimert Park's Day of the Ancestors: Festival of Masks


LA Commons is searching for a team of Youth Artists (Age 15-25) to work with cultural artist to learn about the arts and traditions of Africa and the Diaspora, to share stories of our current COVID -19 time, to vision the future, and to design and create masks and giant puppets for the 2020 Ancestor Mask Festival in Leimert Park. Art forms include: Mask making, African Dance, Drumming, and song. Youth Artists leaders attend a core workshop on Thursdays and 1-2 shorter workshops on Saturday in drum, dance, mask making and cultural arts. Youth team will also receive training as digital organizers, attend Diaspora Dialogues with artists from South Africa, Nigeria, Brazil and beyond, as well as help produce and host virtual culmination on August 30, 2020


Youth Arts team members will be paid a $200 stipend and will receive certificates and community service credit for their work. This phase of the project can accept 15 Youth Artists.


THE ROLE OF THE YOUTH ARTISTS IN THIS PROJECT WILL BE: To attend weekly team workshops; Attend and Support Diaspora Dialogues; Design, Create and film original Art for the festival and partner in the creation and hosting of the festival.

Youth Artist Qualifications: Interest or experience in drawing, painting and writing, Interest in learning about Africa and Diaspora cultures, creating public art , digital organizing and production, and familiarity with Leimert Park Neighborhood.
