Spirit Plate

APRIL 2023: We hosted Spirit Plate, an organization focused on revitalizing ancestral foodways. Through our ‘Cultural Cooking for Wellness’ workshop, Spirit Plate instructors shared the process of creating masa harina, emphasizing the intention put into preparing, grinding, and cooking the ingredients. With Spirit Plate, we at LA Commons envision the restoration of ancestral foodways, benefitting South LA residents with the long term health and cultural impacts of food sovereignty initiatives.

South LA In Dialogue

APRIL - JUNE 2023: LA Commons hosted a photography residency in Fremont in partnership with the Getty Museum, inspired by their photography exhibition, Dawoud Bey & Carrie Mae Weems: In Dialogue.Led by talented photographers Mercedes Carreto and Delaney George, twelve community members, including Fremont students and parents, learned basic photography skills, explored their neighborhoods, and photographed scenes representing community, culture, and wellness.
