Little Tokyo Cultural Organizing Workshop

Cultural organizing exists at the intersection of arts and activism.

Sponsored by LA Commons, Sustainable Little Tokyo, Arts and Democracy and USC's Race, Art and Placemaking Initiative, this half-day convening will bring together organizers, artists, and media and policymakers to learn effective ways to deepen our work and engage our creativity in organizing for community change.

"Cultural organizing is about integrating arts and culture into organizing strategies. It is also about organizing from a particular tradition, cultural identity, and community of place or worldview to advance social and economic justice."

Centered in Little Tokyo, the session will provide a look at how leaders in this neighborhood have been effective in sustaining their cultural presence despite the challenge of being in close proximity to downtown. Take a tour with community leaders and then join in a discussion of their successful organizing approaches as well as examples from other places around Los Angeles and across the country. Come prepared to share your own stories!
