Our programs are grounded in the philosophy that culture is a valuable community resource, art is a powerful tool for telling stories and creating change, and artists have an important role to play in the community development process

Our cohort of youth artists explored “Taking a Stand,” and developed artworks that explore social justice issues they are passionate about. They were guided by LA-based artist, BIJAN MACHEN, lead artist on this project. The collective vision of the project was unveiled in a series of commemorative prints based off their art works. This project was made possible in partnership with the Center for Black Cultural and Student Affairs (CBCSA) and LA Commons.
Sponsored by LA Commons, Sustainable Little Tokyo, Arts & Democracy and USC's Race, Art and Placemaking Initiative, this half-day convening brought together organizers, artists, and media and policymakers to learn effective ways to deepen our work and engage our creativity in community organizing social change.
Centered in Little Tokyo—one of three remaining historic Japantowns in the nation—the session will provide a look at how leaders in this neighborhood have been effective in sustaining their culture despite a new wave of redevelopment and displacement.
