Your support made our first gala a night to remember!

After 25 years of engaging Los Angeles communities through public art, youth leadership, and cultural storytelling, LA Commons held its first-ever fundraising gala on October 16, 2025, at the Skirball Cultural Center, raising over $170,000 to support its mission. The evening honored California Community Foundation President and CEO Miguel Santana,
The Getty Foundation led by Joan Weinstein, and Metro Art, represented by Maya Emsdem.

The program was kicked off by a vibrant procession of drummers, dancers, and puppeteers from across Los Angeles, perfectly encapsulating the gala’s theme of Colors of Connection. Emcee Eric Garcetti, former Mayor of Los Angeles, guided the evening with charm, passion, and humor, drawing the audience into a celebration of creativity and community. LA Commons Founder and Executive Director, Karen Mack, alongside featured speaker, multidisciplinary artist Autumn Breon, shared insights on the transformative power of art during challenging times.

Santana reflected on the enduring impact of artists and arts supporters in Los Angeles: “Now, as the institutions of democracy are under siege, it is art that can give us the hope and courage to guide our actions to make that better world, against any odds.”

Breon’s remarks highlighted art as a portal to possibility: “That is the work of artists. We create wormholes when the present feels unbearable. We hold open portals to other realities where neighbors are not disappeared by secret police, where basic needs are met, where bodily autonomy is non-negotiable, where elders age with dignity, and young people inherit unrestrained and undeniable abundance.”

Weinstein reinforced the essential role of art and community in building empathy and envisioning better futures, while Emsdem emphasized how Metro Art transforms transit into moving canvases that connect neighborhoods and elevate local voices.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who joined us at the gala, to those who supported our mission from afar, and to all who contribute to the vibrancy of Los Angeles through art and community engagement. Your presence and generosity ensure that LA Commons can continue to create meaningful, transformative experiences for artists, youth, and neighborhoods across the city.

“I hope you will leave here tonight ready to continue on this journey with us walking in joyful solidarity together leveraging the power of story and art to deepen the connectedness required for us to overcome our challenges and move into a future that uplifts us all. Thank You.”
