Ted Watkins Park - LA vs Hate Poster Arts Project 

A project of LA Commons

LA Commons is searching for a Lead Artist to work with a core Youth Arts Team (Age 15-25) to collect community stories, and to design and create poster designs for an LA VS Hate poster initiative.  It is estimated that 5000 posters will be printed and distributed to local schools and community centers.  The project will be based at Ted Watkins Park in Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles

 

The Lead artist will head a team of Youth Artists (age 15-25) who will be paid a stipend for their work.  LA Commons will coordinate project partners, supply acquisition,  and recruiting the Youth Arts team. The workshops will take place at Ted Watkins Park. There is a separate supply and printing budget.  The role of the lead artist is to lead youth arts workshops, participate in story gathering events, conduct a design process, and create the final designs for the posters.  Painters and printmakers are particularly encouraged to apply.

Project partners include LA Commons, LA VS Hate, Ted Watkins Park and the LA County Department of Arts and Culture.

The Role of the Lead Artist/Designer in this project will be:

1. To participate in story/image gathering process and events with the group to inform the designs for the poster/s

2. To mentor the Core Youth Arts team to foster youth in the development of skills in visual art and design

3. To finalize the poster designs

 

Project Timeline:

Late August - October 2022

  • WORKSHOPS

              After school Late August- Early October 2022 at Ted Watkins Park

  • STORY GATHERING EVENT

               Ted Watkins Park September 2022

  • Design finalized October 2022

Lead Artist Qualifications:

1. Experience in visual arts and public art

2. Experience working with youth and community

3. Familiarity, experience and connection to Watts community 

 

Compensation 

$3000 Lead Artist Fee. This fee includes leading youth art workshops, design, design approval process, and completing artwork. The supplies, youth mentor and youth stipends are part of an additional budget.
