Cultural Treasures Coalition Member

Promise Zone Arts (PZA) is a cultural asset mapping and activation initiative under the auspices of the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA).  The South LA iteration of this initiative is being conducted in partnership with the LA Commons, SLATE-Z and Community Coalition. Additional partners include the University of Southern California and the Mayor’s Promise Zone Office.  This project gives South LA residents a participatory platform to spotlight local Cultural Treasures -- the artists, sites, cultural practices, events and tradition bearers that they deem significant, illuminating the rich cultural tapestry that makes their communities thrive.

The Cultural Treasures Coalition plays a key role in the implementation of PZA and specifically the cultural asset mapping process at the core of the initiative.  Our goal is to engage community members in the process of identifying cultural treasures based on their knowledge and deep local connections to uncover the cultural practices, people and places that contribute to a very unique identity.  Cultural Treasures Coalition members are at the heart of this process.

Specific Responsibilities of Cultural Treasure Coalition Members:

  • Attend six two-hour meetings between March 2022 and June 2022;

  • Support the PZA team in making strategic connections to support our outreach;

  • Recommend artists and culture bearers to feature at Promise Zone Arts events;

  • Contribute to our goal of gathering Cultural Treasure surveys from South LA community members by collecting 25 surveys each in their communities.

  • Optional: Coordinating events and other outreach efforts

Cultural Treasure Coalition members must possess in-depth knowledge of areas within the Promise Zone as it relates to the existence of artist and cultural practitioners and important community activities and places that are valued as cultural touchstones by members of the community. We are looking for a diverse set of voices reflective of the demographics of the area.

Coalition members will receive a $500 stipend.

Additional stipends available for Coalition members who take on additional event coordination and outreach.
