Programs Intern

Reports to: Director, Community Arts Programs 

Status: Part-time, hourly, $15/hr, 20-30 hours/week

Job Duration: June 2022 - September 2022


LA Commons engages communities in the creation of art for public spaces that tells their unique stories and serves as the basis for dialogue, interaction and a better understanding of Los Angeles. Through collaboration with local partners who have built deep wells of trust, we leverage art and cultural approaches to create positive change. 


Since 2002, we have worked with over 1,000 artists, trained and mentored over 3,000 youth artists, and engaged over 35,000 community members in collaboration with scores of partners in neighborhoods across Los Angeles County. Headquartered in Leimert Park, we are committed to investing in resilient networks of youth, artists and community partners in Central and South Los Angeles. 




The Program Intern will work closely with the Program Director in supporting several LA Commons Neighborhood Story Connections programs, including the Leimert Park Day of the Ancestor Mask Festival, MacArthur Park and South LA  workshops. The intern will play an important role in organization and management assistance, community partner outreach, workshop supply acquisition and delivery to sites, and art production. Duties include: Maintaining contact list of core partners, artists, youth and staff; Youth outreach mentorship and support; Resource and delivery of project supplies; and supporting community and youth arts workshops. This position will work approximately 25 hours a week from June through September. 


At the end of the sixteen-week internship, the intern will:


  • Balance working collaboratively with the team as well as independently be encourage to bring their own ideas to the table

  • Gain an understanding, through story gathering celebrations and other program events related to the various projects, of the cultural assets of Los Angeles neighborhoods

  • Learn how to plan and implement projects, including setting goals, timelines, and overcoming obstacles

  • Develop skills for working with cultural organizations and community members of diverse backgrounds

  • Gain an understanding and first-hand knowledge of the assets and challenges of Los Angeles’ culturally rich neighborhoods

  • Gain experience and hone leadership skills in online programming and community engagement strategies


Skills and qualifications


  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • A proficiency and/or experience with Google Suite and/or Microsoft Office. 

  • A strong sense of professionalism and collaborative capabilities

  • The ability to take initiative

  • Strong organizational skills

  • Strong research skills 

  • An interest in community arts and culture as a strategy for community development

  • An attention to detail, deep curiosity and drive to communicate complex information clearly and effectively

  • Social media and graphic design experience is helpful. 

  • Familiarity working with youth and community is important.
