#StaffSpotlight - Meet Joré Aaron (She/Her), Executive Assistant at LA Commons! Joré is from South Central LA and has been working at LA Commons for two months!
What brought you to LA Commons?
To be very honest, it was the staff page. I saw a staff that actually reflected the Los Angeles that I am familiar with, specifically with several Black and brown folk who seemed to be around my age—a stark difference from my previous encounters with non-profit organizations. I saw a respect and valuing of various perspectives—and I wanted to know why these folks I saw on the page wanted to commit their time and energy to a space like this. I’m feeling really grateful that I am able to begin carving out my own “why” as I spend more time working with this group.
What has been your favorite part about working at LA Commons?
Actual, definitive involvement with the South LA community. The idea of “community” is not vague or ambiguous—there’s a level of specific care and appreciation that goes into all of the connections to several community members and groups. It’s really wonder to feel a genuine closeness to the community you are serving, and that, at the end of the day, you are a part of.
Do you do anything outside of work? If so, please describe!
Yes, I do many things outside of work! I am a multidisciplinary artist, currently with a focus on spoken work/poetry performance. I also am either playing video games, working on being a better plant parent, and visiting my local library.
Where's your favorite spot in LA? Why?
I have too many to pick just one, but one I will highlight is Han Bat Seol Lung Tang, a bone broth soup restaurant near my house. It’s become my most easily accessible comfort food place, mostly because 1. The soup is literally life changing and 2. The atmosphere is cozy in a very authentic way—it’s just good soup in a small corner restaurant where locals pour in and take a load off.
What are you listening to/watching/reading right now?
I’m actually reading my own work over and over again—I’m currently working on a book! For something more entertaining, I’ve been watching Love Island (the UK version, of course).
