Staff Spotlight: Dena Cheng

Meet Dena Cheng (she/her), Development and Communications Manager at LA Commons! Dena is from North Hills in the San Fernando Valley and has been working at LA Commons since September 2022.

What brought you to LA Commons?

As someone with an interest and experience in policy making, I am very interested in monuments, and the ways we commemorate our belief systems, values, and futures in living works of art.

What has been your favorite part about working at LA Commons

As someone who is passionate about wealth redistribution and supporting BIPOC leadership, I find that the ability to both redirect resources to creative visionaries and amplify their messages extremely fulfilling.

LA Commons mission is to "engage communities in the creation of public art that tells their unique stories and serves as the basis for dialogue, interaction, and a shared understanding of Los Angeles."

What meaning does this statement have for you personally?

I believe that LA Commons' mission highlights how everyone has a story to tell!

Do you do anything outside of work? If so, please describe!

I enjoy reading, drawing, cooking, swimming, and volunteering outside of work! Most recently, I signed up for a wheel throwing class.

Where's your favorite spot in LA? Why?

My favorite place in LA is the Hannam chain market on Olympic in Koreatown. I have very distinct childhood memories of going there with mom while eating delicious steamed red buns. To me, there's something magical about going into a bustling Korean market. It's about the simple pleasures!

What are you listening to/watching/reading right now?

I've been obsessed with the new season of The White Lotus [big Aubrey Plaza fan here!], the band Bad Omens and the new Blood Orange EP, the podcasts 'ologies' and 'Sounds like a Cult,' and Hari Kunzru novels.

We’re so happy to have Dena on the LA Commons team. Look out for future upcoming staff spotlights to meet our other team members!
