Operations Intern

Reports to: Director, Operations and Strategy

Status: Part-time, hourly, $15/hr, 20-30 hours/week

Job Duration: June 2022 - September 2022

 

LA Commons engages communities in the creation of art for public spaces that tells their unique stories and serves as the basis for dialogue, interaction and a better understanding of Los Angeles. Through collaboration with local partners who have built deep wells of trust, we leverage art and cultural approaches to create positive change. 

 

Since 2002, we have worked with over 1,000 artists, trained and mentored over 3,000 youth artists, and engaged over 35,000 community members in collaboration with scores of partners in neighborhoods across Los Angeles County. Headquartered in Leimert Park, we are committed to investing in resilient networks of youth, artists and community partners in Central and South Los Angeles. 

 

Overview 

 

The Operations and Special Projects Intern will play an important role in the administration of our organization. The intern will work closely with the Director of Strategy and Operations to support planning and plan implementation: developing and supporting our team of board, staff and artist, youth and community partners and developing and stewarding our resources. The intern will be responsible for preparing reports and presentations for collaborators and partners including LA Commons’ staff, board, fiscal sponsor and funders. This position will work approximately 25 hours a week from June through September.

 

At the end of the sixteen-week internship, the intern will:

 

  • Gain understanding and experience of building operational capacity in a diverse, community-engaged nonprofit organization

  • Learn about strategic plan and projects implementation, including setting goals, timelines, and overcoming obstacles

  • Develop skills for working with cultural organizations and community members of diverse backgrounds

  • Develop technical data collection, organization, analysis and visualization skills through a host of platforms to generate reports that support organizational and programmatic growth 

  • Gain an understanding and first-hand knowledge of the assets and challenges of Los Angeles’ culturally rich neighborhoods

 

Skills and qualifications

 

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • A proficiency and/or experience with Google Suite and/or Microsoft Office. 

  • A strong sense of professionalism and collaborative capabilities

  • The ability to take initiative

  • Strong organizational skills

  • Strong research skills 

  • An interest in community arts and culture as a strategy for community development

  • An attention to detail, deep curiosity and drive to communicate complex information clearly and effectively

  • Familiarity with database and project management systems, Quickbooks (or other accounting or bookkeeping systems), Adobe Suite (or other design systems) a plus, but not required.

  • Graphic design ability is a plus, but not required.
