Lead Artist/Photographer
South LA: In Dialogue
A community engagement project of LA Commons in partnership with the Getty
LA Commons is searching for a Lead Artist/ Photographer to work with an intergenerational team of 6 adult community members and 6 youth artists(age 15-25) to collect community stories and design a photography project that serves as the basis for place based intergenerational dialogue. This project is a community engagement project in partnership with the Getty, inspired by the upcoming Getty exhibit “Dawoud Bey & Carrie Mae Weems: In Dialogue.” LA Commons will select a photographer for our Leimert Park site and another for our site in the Florence-Graham neighborhood. LA Commons develops artistic and cultural projects that reveal the unique stories of L.A.’s Neighborhoods.
The Lead Artist will collaborate with a team of community members and youth artists who will be paid a stipend for their work. LA Commons will coordinate project partners, supply acquisition, and recruit the youth and other community members. There is a separate supply and printing budget. The role of the lead artist is to lead weekly workshops, participate in story gathering events, conduct a design process, and serve as creative director for the photography series. There will be six workshops at the site from late February/ early March to early May and a class visit to the Getty exhibition.

The role of each Lead Artist/ Photographer in this project will be:

To participate in story/ image gathering process and events with the group to inform the designs for the photography series

To mentor the youth and community team in the development of skills in photography and community engagement

To creatively direct the photography series
Lead Artist Qualifications:
-
Experience in photography
-
Experience working with youth and community
-
Familiarity, experience and connection to either the Leimert Park community or Florence-Graham community
ARTIST FEE for Each Lead Artist: $2000, payable at beginning, middle, and end of project
