Day of the Ancestors: Festival of Masks marks its 10th anniversary in a time of civil unrest and the coronavirus pandemic with a focus on uplifting our connection to the continent of Africa and across the diaspora to guide us in creating the future we all want to see. This program has never been more important as an unapologetic display of Blackness in America and around the globe. Although we cannot host our months-long engagement activities in person in Leimert Park, we are transitioning to a fully online presentation that will take advantage of the opportunity to link with the creative wisdom of artists from around the world. An international contingent from Nigeria, South Africa, Brazil, Curacao, Zambia and, Leimert Park, welcomes all as participants in a virtual expression of hope, solidarity and insight.
Our journey through the African Diaspora culminates, as always, in a day in honor of the Ancestors. This year is especially poignant as we need the wisdom of our spirit guides more than ever. On August 30th at 2 pm, we will join in a virtual celebration of our common humanity grounded in the motherland, where humans emerged more than 2 million years ago. Drawing from the incredible performances and creative spirit of the summer, it will be a not missed affirmation of the global power of Blackness. The 2020 Digital Festival of the Mask will feature live and pre-recorded performances; new and archival footage, ceremony, music, dance, community and celebration as all join to honor ancestors, enjoy food for the heart, mind and soul, and experience the power of Black Joy!
