Day of Ancestors:

Festival of Masks

Leimert Park’s Day of the Ancestors: Festival of the Mask (FOM) is an annual celebration of our ancestors and an invocation for the South Central LA community. Founded in 2010 by artists Najite Agindotan, Rene Fisher-Mims, and Ben Caldwell in collaboration with LACommons, FOM is a multicultural, multigenerational, and multimedia arts event that champions the vast identities of the African diaspora.

Our youth cohort and community members participate in visual and performing arts workshops for 2 months leading up to the festival.

Workshop content includes mask and costume making techniques, West African social dances, and drum rhythms from the African Diaspora.

The festival features a libation ceremony, procession, and a captivating line up of dance and musical performances.

Our programs are grounded in the philosophy that culture is a valuable community resource, art is a powerful tool for telling stories and creating change and artists have an important role to play in the community development process.
