On June 30, we will again celebrate rich African traditions with the third annual Day of the Ancestors: Festival of Masks in Leimert Park.
This year’s event promises to be incredible as we will be joined by special guests Adunni & Nefertiti direct from Lagos, Nigeria. The multitalented group of seven women will share their unique traditional practices blended with a modern twist with our enthusiastic audience. A grant from the Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs’ (DCA) prestigious Cultural Exchange International is partially paying for their trip.
Held in tandem with the Leimert Park Art Walk that day, people from all over Los Angeles will participate in intergenerational art workshops, music, and spoken word performances inspired by annual rites practiced in villages throughout Nigeria and beyond. The mask making workshop starts at noon, and all finished masks will be featured in the Procession, starting at 3pm.
This event is made possible through the generous support from the Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs, Sempra Energy, the James Irvine Foundation, the Weingart Foundation, the Los Angeles County Supervisor District 2, and by the Alliance For Traditional California Traditional Arts, in partnership with the Walter and Elise Haas Fund, the Willaim and Flora Hewlett Foundation, and the Surdna Foundation. A special thanks to our community partners, KAOS Network, the Leimert Park Art Walk, the Crehshaw Corridor BID, ECWANDC, Motherland Music, and Community Build.
