A Weekend of Music and Getting Out the Vote in South LA

This weekend LA Commons ran an arts booth at two big South L.A. summer festivals as part of Community Coalition’s #GoVote campaign.

On July 30th, the Expo Center Summer Music Festival gave stage to the Youth Orchestra Los Angeles (YOLA) groups of Expo Center; family and community members gathered to hear the variety of youth performances. Kids swarmed the LA Commons booth eager to make art. The project: creating DIY fans, featuring a “Go Vote” trumpet in honor of the musical weekend and voting. Parents and guardians were also able to sign up for volunteer phone banking in order to help get out the vote in their neighborhoods.

The same set up was at the 21st Annual Central Avenue Jazz Festival on both Saturday and Sunday. Central Avenue was blocked off from 41st Street to 43rd Place for the music festival: food, art, community organizations, and jazz performances. Located right by stage two, kids brought their #GoVote fans to life with markers and glitter.
