This month’s new moon on June 5th marked the beginning of the Muslim holiday of Ramadan. LA Commons hosted a first ever kick-off with L.A’s Muslim community to welcome this sacred time by bringing together Muslims and non-Muslims to celebrate. Artmaking, music, food, poetry and prayer set the tone for a month of fasting and community building. The fasting lasts from sunrise to sunset; a meal, suhur, is eaten before dawn and the fast is broken after sunset with another meal, iftar. Nightly iftars are a time to join together with friends, family, and community.
