South LA Windows to Health

Community Story Summit
Building Healthy Communities – South LA
Saturday, April 27, 2013

LA Commons, artists Heriberto Luna, Noni Olabisi, Carol Zou and youth from the YMCA, Academy for Multilingual Arts & Sciences and Augustus Hawkins High School hosted a community picnic at 5300 Vermont on Saturday, April 27th. Youth interviewed community partners and neighbors as part of their design process for three proposed public art works themed around health and healthy communities. DJ Don Thomas spun the music, while Storyteller Michael McCarty acted as MC for the event. Food was catered by La Taquiza Mexican Grill and Cooking With Gabby created delicious and refreshing water/fruit drinks for everyone. Cooking With Gabby also performed nutrition themed songs and had everyone on their feet dancing for fitness.

A special thanks to our Community Partners: Brotherhood Crusade, Building Healthy Communities South LA, Cooking With Gabby, ISIC, IAM, TRUST LA, Healthy Communities Youth leadership Council, PPLA, UMMA Clinic ,  and the Council Office of Jan Perry.

This event was made possible by funding through the California Endowment.
