Trekking LA Tour 2011: Uncovering Undiscovered Boyle Heights

LOS ANGELES, CA — August 11, 2011 — On August 21st 2011, LA Commons continues a summer series of tours with an exploration of the rich hidden gems to be found in Los Angeles’ Boyle Heights. Grand Performances and LA Commons have partnered to explore the music and culture of Boyle Heights this summer. A highlight will be a private tour of the Breed Street Shul, which although no longer in operation, still resonates with the spirit of congregations past. The tour will reveal other stories from the neighborhood’s Jewish history and of course, the Mexican present. We end the walk at Libros Schmibros, a bridge between eras and cultures, where we will share conversation and a meal.

This is the fourth year of LA Commons’ popular summer Trekking LA tour series. Other neighborhoods featured this year include Koreatown and Watts. LA Commons helps Los Angeles’ diverse neighborhoods give voice to their unique stories through community-based arts programs that express the cultural and historical essence of the communities. With its Trekking LA program, LA Commons introduces tourists to these arts projects, and to the authentic food, music and culture of the communities. Through these inter-connected programs, LA Commons educates, empowers and enriches neighborhoods, while promoting greater understanding, engagement and connectedness for residents and visitors to Los Angeles. Established in 2002, LA Commons is a 501©(3) organization, and is a project of the non-profit incubator, Community Partners. For more information, visit lacommons.org.
